Community Development

Neduten Traditional Teaching Series

Neduten Teaching

The project was a success in terms of its implementation and effectiveness on the targeted youths. We targeted youth/students who currently attend the local schools that have been experiencing more absenteeism or below grade levels than others.

Our main objective was to have total immersion of our Traditional ways of teaching young people and having those teachings linked to our language and culture.
Stemming from this project and based on comments made by the youths/students we developed a project for the parents who required some insights and awareness in our community settings. We are also planning and designing workshops for the local school teachers, educators, and MCFD workers about our Traditional ways and means of teaching the young.

In all, this project has made good progress for Lake Babine Nation in terms of establishing a starting point and continuing with set directions for the betterment of all families.

The project was surprisingly more of a success than expected, given the short time frame and amount of funds to be expended before September 30, 2007. It was not only the project that is to be praised, but the coordinator and participants who gave it their all and pushed their abilities to the limits. I feel that this approach is long outstanding and when the opportunity became a reality, this project blended in with the Band Council’s core business. It is exciting to witness the change of attitudes toward Economic Development from a Band Member’s perspective that has been on Social Assistance for a lengthy period.

This project included five phases and as milestones were attained it evolved into a prolonged event of higher learning for all group members. During the process of the orientation and business workshop series, group members began to view education and essential skills as keys to succeed in the areas of economic development.

The outcome has been measurable in terms of 10 out of 15 people getting out of their homes and attending higher learning. Comparing this scenario to 4 months ago when all participants were not active in the types of activities planned for them. One participant is off Social Assistance, receiving an Education allowance while taking up Culinary Arts and upgrading at the same time. The participants who kept within the planned activities now have the ability to volunteer and willing to participate in any meeting. The participants have dedicated their time away from their families to make better decisions in their lives by continuing on with their progress. They have progressed from being passive aggressive to thinking about working harder to
get what you want and keeping that attitude at full capacity. They were given informative tools to deal with failures, rejection, and/or ignorance in areas such as: Governments, LBN Band Offices, Industry, General Public behaviors, Band Membership, and other public institutions.
