Hello all, my name is Tanya Williams and I have been hired as the Recreation Coordinator for the Woyenne Community. I am the daughter of Jeff & Frances Brown and I belong to the Beaver Clan. I am married to Ted Williams, Jr. and we have a beautiful daughter, Jessica who just turned 17!
Our family has recently moved back to our home community here in Burns Lake after six (6) years of living in the lower mainland, dlue to educational and employment opportunities. I completed the Social Services Worker Program at the College of New Caledonia in 2003 and sought out opportunities to utilize and enhance my skills, so that one day I could bring these skills and experiences to my own community.
I have been working the Social Services and Youth Sector for the past 15 years. My career began here with the Lake Babine Nation as the Tachet Summer Youth Coordinator. I was a youth ambassador for ICBC as part of their Youth Incentive Program. I’ve supported children and their families as a Transition House Worker, as well as a practicum student witht he Kay Skak Higher Learning Program providing support to students.
For the past 5 1/2 years I have had the good fortune to work witht he Urban Native Youth Association (UNYA), in Vancouver, in many different capacities. UNYA provides very unique and innovative programs and services for native youth. i worked with the School SUpport, Homework Club, Youth Drop-In centre, Tutor Mentor and Mentorship Programs. Coordinating various programs, workshops and activities.
I hope to offer many oportunities for youth in our community to build their self-esteem, motivation and identities in a safe and empowering environment; that will incorporate our culture and traditions. I will be looking to partner with all the LBN departments, staff, community groups and community members to assist in development of these activities.
I will be building working relationships with local community organizations, such as the local schools and resource agencies. Most importantly, I will be working to connect with our youth and assist in developing a Youth Advisory Council, in order to hear from thier own voices what they need and wand in their community. Please contact me anytime at the LBN Main office in Woyenne at (250) 692-4700 or toll free at 1 888 692-3214 to share any ideas and get involved.
